Family Assessment
A Family Assessment Report may be ordered by the Court or undertaken by agreement between the parties, typically after proceedings have commenced. This process involves a thorough, child-focused assessment designed to understand the lived experiences, needs, and safety of the children within the context of their family system.
The assessment draws on the perspectives of each party and the children, with careful consideration given to the impact of trauma, family violence, and protective factors. Observations of parent–child interactions form a central part of the process, allowing for an informed understanding of relational dynamics, attachment, and emotional safety.
Where appropriate, information may be obtained from schools, treating professionals, counsellors, and other relevant supports, and significant family members may also be included to ensure a holistic view of the child’s world.
This is a non-confidential assessment, and a written report is provided to the Court. The report synthesises the information gathered and offers professional opinion and recommendations regarding care arrangements, time spent with each parent, the children’s expressed views and experiences, and the often differing perspectives of the parties.
Particular attention is given to risk assessment, including family violence and child protection concerns, with recommendations grounded in promoting the children’s safety, stability, and emotional wellbeing within the formal court process.
